HR352

The HR 352 was designed by Christoph Rassy and Olle Enderlein. It was in production from 1978 to 1991, with 802 boats built. It is a two cabin layout with one aft under the deck. Several options available for this model include a tall rig with double spreaders, and a larger engine. There is also a Scandanavia model with forced hot air heat, refrigeration, and pressure water.

Other comments, plans, special notes: I bought here in the West Indies at Trinidad in 1994 from a guy called Arto (R2). He had started a firm in Trinidad and had moved to a house. My wife, two daughters (four and five years old) and I flew down in December '94, sailed Venezuela, and the Windward and Leeward Islands for five months.

In May we left St. Martin bound for Bermuda. After a couple of days we heard that it was blowing hard up there and decided to set course for the Azores. After 25 days we arrived there, and a week later it was time to set sail for the rest of Europe. Ten days later we arrived in Ireland. In Dublin my oldest daughter enjoyed here sixth birthday at a small tivoly park. Went through the Caledonian canal, and after that it was just three days to Gothenburg Sweden, in July of 1995.

Now we just to holiday sailing and saving money for the next trip. We are still looking for the ultimate main sponsor, so if you know any, don't hesitate to inform me.

Ms Kim Roberts, homeport Foynes Ireland, was the third owner and changed the name to Samphire, after a local island and lighthouse in Tralee Bay.

Previous known vessel names and owners:    I bought Dorothy Lee V from Michel Laz in Noirmoitier, Brittany, France in April 2002. She was lying at Pornic, then her home port.

Michel had owned Dorothy Lee V from new and had bought her in 1984 from the then importer one Andre Wydauw. Andre had subsequently retired and then had been asked by HR if he would come out of retirement and once more be their importer in France and so it was Andre who brokered the deal. You might be interested to know that Michel Laz got from me precisely the same price that he had paid Andre 18 years before. That says a lot about HR 352's. And what's more I was happy with the price. It was less than what I would have had to pay for the same spec and age of HR 352 in the UK.

Michel Laz who is 70 was selling DLV in order to buy a Microlight aeroplane. He is an intrepid chap. He was also the Chairman of the Brittany cruising association and so while DLV has not girdled the world yet she had cruised some 10,000 miles when I bought her. Michel had had four previous Dorothy Lees, hence the 'V'. As 'cinque' in French sounds the same as 'sank' in English and as she is my first Dorothy Lee, I thought I would drop the 'V' when I registered her for Part 1 in the UK.

She is a fabulous boat and I love her to bits. She feels very safe and is terribly forgiving which I need.

I persuaded Tom Cunliffe to come out for a day on her and he loved her.

The only worry I have is when I have to single hand her and I have to come onto my mooring at Moody's Marina where I am port to with a prevailing off pontoon wind and of course as we know a starboard kick in reverse. I have to get my midship mooring line around the stern cleat on the pontoon sharpish, else I will be resting against the boat next door. Apart from having heart failure over this I suppose the only way over it is to keep practising. I have not made a mess of it yet but it worries me to death.

We'll be going further afield in the future but for now it's the Solent and the south coast.

I just noticed Sid Shaw's posting...I met Sid several years ago when I was docked near him in Solomons MD. Glad to see they have made some intersting trips.....and yes..it's the only Green stripped HR I've seen.

Previous known vessel names and owners: We are the second owners, having bought the boat in 1990 from Tony Widman of Greenwich, CT. He was the original owner, named her STAR SHELL and sailed her under the New York YC burgee. He was worried that she might be taken for an Irwin?! so he repainted the HR blue stripes with Jade Green Awlgrip, making her the only HR with a green stripe that we are aware of.

Other comments, plans, special notes: DOVKA is the "tall rig option" with double spreaders. We have sailed the boat from the Chesapeake to Bermuda ('94 & '96),Southern New England ('92), Maine & Nova Scotia ('98), Caribbean & Venezuela ('95 & '96). An item of possible interest to other HR owners was our encounter with a barracuda which smashed out the 1/2 inch plexiglass opening port above the starboard hanging locker. It occurred in May 1997 while anchored in Guadeloupe on a moonlit night. We heard a crash which we thought was a hatch falling closed. The following morning we discovered the port's plexiglass broken at one hinge and the other hinge fractured. From the teeth and scales we found on the port-hole frame and in the boat, a Smithsonian ichthyologist identified the culprit as a giant barracuda estimated at 20 pounds and 4 feet in length. It had most likely seen the moon reflecting off the port and tried to eat it. As a post script, we were most fortunate to be able locate another HR352 owner who had spare port lights identical to ours since these ports went out of production in 1990.

We have made numerous improvements to DOVKA over the years which we would be happy to share with other owners.

10/29/01 update- We crossed the Atlantic in 2000 via Bermuda, the Azores & Portugal. In 2001 we sailed the coasts of Spain, the Balearics, Sardinia, Corsica, Tunisia, Sicily and mainland Italy. DOVKA is wintering in Gaeta, Italy.

03/06/05 update- She is still in the Med and we are still spending our summers cruising on her. At he last update, she was in Gaeta on Italy’s west coast for the winter 2001-2002. She then spent the next two winters in Marmaris Turkey and this winter, 2004-2005, she is lying in Monfalcone, Italy at the top of the Adriatic near Trieste. I will probably be replacing the engine with a low-hour Volvo 2003T identical to the original. She has been a reliable vessel and has treated us well. However, we did blow out another of the opening ports, this time the forward port one, while beating into 25 knot winds and seas in Greece, in June 2004.

After our purchase in autumn 1999 I sailed her with daughter Esmée from Travemünde (Germany) to Cuxhaven and from thereon with 2 friends in not so favourable weather conditions via Helgoland to Lelystad, (Holland) now the homeport. This trip through the infamous German Bight immedately proved the quality and seagoing abilities of the HR 352! Since I'm pensioned, I hope to be able to cross the Atlantic with Arctic Skua and visit the USA somewhere in 2003.

Previous known vessel names and owners: Originally purchased in 1988 by a CT owner through Eastland Yacht in Essex, CT USA. Then sold to a Massachusetts couple who owned it for about 10 years. We are the third owners.
Other comments, plans, special notes: We just purchased the boat in a few days ago (early April, 2001) and are having some work done to her. Aside from the seatrial, we haven't sailed her yet. Our plans are to sail her from Connecticut to Nova Scotia and back this summer, taking a leasurely two months to do it. I would like to say that the information obtained from this site, along with the enthusiasm from the other HR owners, was a main reason we considered HR in the first place. Also, thanks to the many folks who answered our questions as we wound our way through the survey and negotiaton process.

We cruised the coasts of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine in 2001 for 60 days with the whole family (Lou, Clare, Max (12) and Sam (10). We found that we had MORE than enough space for the four of us on a two-month cruise. In 2003 we raced in the Marion to Bermuda Race and finished 14th out of 80 yachts. With stiff breeze the whole way, Windsong II galloped like a thoroughbred. In 2005 we plan to enter the Marion to Bermuda Race as well as the Halifax Race. We'd love to see other HR's in there as well.

Via Spain-Gibraltar-Canary Islands- West Indies-Trinidad-Venezuela-Columbia-Panama Canal- Equador-South Pacific-Galapagos-Pitcairn-Gambier-Tahiti-Cook Islands-Niue-Tonga-Minerva Reef-down to New Zealand, I have had a awesome time just an amazing trip, this is a such a fabulous boat, so stabil and strong,I never feeled uncomfortable even in very rough conditions. We've done 24.000sm since 1999 and and still best friends. She's still in mint condition and well looked after, the only thing that needs to be done is the teakdeck and I'm thinking about painting her hull in a dark blue colour. As I've settled down here in New Zealand, at the moment we just cruising the coast, but can't wait to sail her back to the Islands one day-and she's pretty keen on it too !!!

Other comments, plans, special notes: We bought T-Fish in June 2004 - just in-time for a 4 weeks family cruise (together with our daughters Leandra and Julia on the Ijsselmeer and the Dutch Waddenzee incl. the beautiful island of Vlieland. After a relaxed family cruise we plan to check her seaworthy this year on a cruise from the Ijseelmeer - to the Channel Island and the Scilly Islands.
