HR 39
The HR 39 is a Germán Frers design,
with 219 built from 1991 to 2003.. The yacht
is billed by HR as being "fabulously roomy". The design did
not try to pack in as many berths as possible, but tried to give the boat "elbow
space for her crew", making her a nice live-aboard or a roomy cruiser. The aft
cabin has the option of two berths, a double and a single, or a queen and sofa. The
main salon has an option of two sofas, or a sofa and two chairs. The HR 39 is
actually 40' 1" long, has a 12' 4" beam, displaces 22,000 lbs, has a 6' 1"
draft, and 807 sq. ft. of sail.
Detailed information can be found at
Hallberg-Rassy's web site.

Other comments, plans, special notes: Boat was just completed last
week (first week of December, 98) and should be in transit via ship to
Baltimore/Anapolis for some final rigging. We visited Ellos in late October and had a
great tour of the factory. Eventually, when we can consistently get more time
from work, we will take it to Lake Michigan and later to Florida. We sure
can't wait for the sailing season to get here. For now we will have to be satisfied with
looking at the HR 39 poster under the Christmas tree.

We purchased Aqualung in Annapolis in the spring of 2006. We are living
aboard with three of our children and sailing the East Coast. We plan to head
south in the fall towards the Bahamas and the Caribbean. We'd love to receive an
email from you. Fair Winds!

Other comments, plans, special notes: Here are
some shots of our new HR39, Cracker Jack, which arrived in Annapolis December 31, 1999.
We have already spent four nights aboard (ed. note- this received
1/17/00) despite having no mast yet, due to the wind blowing the water out of the
lift well at the marina. We continue to be impressed by HR's attention to detail and
thoroughness. For instance the neat little screw covers on the windscreen to deflect
green water around the screws and so discourage leaking and corrosion. Finding these
things is like figuring out that difficult clue in a crossword without help. Given
that it was 27 degrees last Saturday night and the wind made it feel like 10 degrees, the
best features so far have been the Webasco forced air heat and the hull insulation which
combine to make us throw the covers off while sleeping. WOW!
November 6, 2001: We have now been sailing
Cracker Jack for two and a half seasons on the Chesapeake and the East Coast
as we prepare to take off in 2003. After lots of miles under the keel I can
say HRs sail as good as they look and they liveaboard even better.
This past October CJ, three years old, was THE
Hallberg-Rassy Annapolis Boat Show Boat. For us it was a great big HR
appreciation party as many HR owners and admirers came aboard to share their
enthusiasm for these great sailboats (and that one motor sailor, the HR94). I
admit to stealing a few ideas from some of the owners, to be installed over
the next year as we prepare to head perpendicular to the coast. And we got to
meet Dave and Jahnn Gibson who came aboard for our annual personal open boat!
Currently CJ is docked in the center of Annapolis,
MD, at City Dock for the winter. Next season's sailing plans call for us to
explore the Bay south of the Potomac and, maybe, to venture again to New
England. Also in the talking stages, with two other HR owners from the
Bay, is a mid-June Chesapeake Hallberg-Rassy rendezvous somewhere in the
Mid-Bay region. Anyone interested in attending by land or sea can contact me
via email.

An admittedly unexciting picture, but so appropriate for the East Coast
at this time of year. She sits newly delivered from the HR Yard, mastless,
covered with her "official" HR wrap, waiting (like her owners) for spring to
arrive on the Chesapeake.
