Monsun 31

The Monsun 31 was produced between1974 and 1982, with 904 boats built.  She was designed by Olle Enderlein.  She is sloop rigged, with the classic Hallberg-Rassy fixed windshield above, and beautiful mahogany brightwork below.  She also has a full keel with cutaway forefoot, and the rudder is protected from grounding.  More detailed information can be found at the Hallberg-Rassy web site www.hallberg-rassy.se/monsun/monsun.html.

Other comments, plans, special notes:  Owner since 1994, sailed her for 3 years on Lake Michigan, in 1997 trucked her down to Miami where I started Atlantic crossing with stops in Bahamas, Bermuda, Azores, UK, Holland, Germany (Kiel Kanal), Danmark and Poland, my home country. WAS GREAT! In summers 98-01 trips to Holland, Finland, Sweden. Left Baltic in 2001 to Amsterdam, where laid down mast and begun trans Holland, Belgium and France canal trip. Recommend to anybody. Currently in mid France waiting for Easter to motor down south to Med. In May I sail to ....... guess :->. Comments very welcome. Photos? Have to scan them first, but promise you'll see some.

Other comments, plans, special notes:  Monsun no. 26 seems to be fitted with all comfort extras from HR, an migth have a interesting background as new.   Teakdekking/holdingtank/hydraulic steering/special upholstry (still in exellent condition ) /gascooker with owen/spinnaker equipment/selfsteering m/74, storageports in the hull below the winches, heater, original outdoor table with hull no printed, etc..  The Yacht was striped blue with a very strange lable cut in. This instripe lable showed a tiny guy sitting on a toilet with the words "med tank" printed in Swedish "med tank" = "with tank".  The previous owner told me that the Yatch propably was displayed in a boat fair. This could explain the stripe and the nice OEM equipment.  HR have no records of this, but Magnus Rassy mailed me: "the Yatch was delivered to the Stockholm area as new". The local dealer migth have displayed the boat in the Stockholm fail 1974.

The boat have been well kept and have been fitted with a sweet water cooled VP 2003 in 1990. Furling genua, brand new Gran sails, waterheater with preassuresystem, new ISOTERM cooler, modern gascoocker with owen, solar cell, new toilet, built in battery charger 220V etc.  I purchased the boat two years ago and have fitted a new special dekking ( laqered Dutch cork stripes ) inside the boat as well as new flooring/hoses/hullvents in toilet area.  The Selden rig is standard, but all old wires/ropes replaces with modern Dyneema full loops, as well as new Selden rig screws/alu covers. Gas system hoses replaced, bottle fitted with remote controlled magnetic valve.  New dark blue stripes have also been fitted.

Our family, Mum, Dad and 3 kids aged 7,4&4, will sail in the Stockholm archipelago this summer

Other comments, plans, special notes:   Recently purchased Mongoose 2 at boatyard in Annapolis, where she'd been sitting for a year. Everything was all ahoo, but I am slowly putting her back in shape. Woodwork is now done, engine is out being rebuilt, am replacing several through-hulls and upgrading seacocks. Sailed her in the fall after purchase and was impressed. She's quite lively for a full-keeler. Looking at options for an inner forestay (for small headsail when at sea) and also asymmetrical downwind sail. Any opinions/observations would be welcome. Also wire halyards are giving me fits, jumping sheaves etc, so will pull the rig in spring and refurbish. Any suggestions there?

Other comments, plans, special notes:   We purchased Patience in San Diego in the fall of 2005. Subsequently we have done a major refit including; new sails, new Volvo Diesel, repainting spars, repairing damage to rudder and prop, epoxy coating bottom, new 12 and 120V electrical system, replacing the hydraulic steering with the original tiller, and new instrumentation. A few features that appear unique to our boat are the bow sprit and the boom crutch. Additionally, the starboard quarterberth has been shortened and a solid wood heater has been installed.

We just spent our first summer sailing in local waters and the boat is perfect for our family.   We are very happy with it.

I have since repowered with a 3YM30 Yanmar.  It is nice to have an engine that starts compared to the old MD2B.  We look forward to cruising the nooks and crannies of Lake Superior and then perhaps a more extended cruise in a few years.

Previous known vessel names and owners: Patience was purchased new in 1974 in Florida and has been berthed in Seattle and San Diego before   we purchased and brought her to Vancouver in September of 2005.
Other comments, plans, special notes:  We have just trucked Patience to Vancouver from San Diego and she is undergoing a major refit - grinding away and reglassing the joint between the two halves of the hull, removing the hydraulic steering and replacing with the original tiller, repainting mast and boom, new headsail furling gear, new sails, and new canvas all around.

In the next year or so we also plan or replacing all the wiring and refurbishing some of the interior woodwork. I will send along photos when the work is complete.

Uniquely this boat was equipped from the factory with a solid wood burning heating stove and a boom cutch. Fortunately, the engine was replaced last year with a new 3 cylinder Volvo diesel.

We look forward to completing this major work and restoring the boat to bristol condition and then will take a 2 month extended cruise of coastal British Columbia during the summer of 2006.

Anybody out there have sketches/photos of some decent anchoring arrangement without mounting a bow-sprit? I`d love a bow-roller for the rope & chain, in which I also could keep the anchor stowed. A bit awkward on the Monsun because of the deep bulwarks - I would hate any serious surgery to this...Any help appreciated!

   Last winter we had some helpful advice from users of the cløassic HR homepages re bowroller for our Monsun no 344 "Anna". I had great qualms about grinding away part of the bulwarks to install a standard roller, and ended up making a pattern in plywood & fibreglass and taking it to a local welder with a good reputation for his work in stainless steel. During the summer we have sailed the boat up the Norwegian west and south coast to our new base in Tromsø, well north of the arctic circle. The bowrollwr has worked flawless, but we are putting link plates on the roller furler to give more room for anchor work.

Other comments, plans, special notes: I purchased this boat in November 2004 and have been working on it for the last 3 weeks since it arrived here in Port San Luis from Chicago. It will probably take 5 weeks to complete all mast and below-waterline hull work. I'm stripping about 10 coats of bottom paint off the hull, replacing old gate valves with ball valves and new thru-hulls, buff and wax hull, removed stern ladder and gate (making room for a future Monitor Windvane)and filling the space with stainless rail, new bottom paint, new accent stripe, new boot stripe and blue stripe to match jsut below the toe-rail. Installing raw water strainer, new custom holding tank, new all rope halyards, and quite a few other "small" things.  The boat will be based in Morro Bay, CA. and I hope to go south next fall to Mexico and Central America.
