Rasmus / Nab 35

The Rasmus was designed by Olle Enderlein, with 760 Rasmus 35s built by Christoph Rassy between 1967 and 1978.   They were Christoph's first production series boat.  The hull, deck, and cabin is fiberglass, and the deck is vinyl foam cored.  The boat is a center cockpit design with three separate cabins.  The owners cabin is aft, and is finished in mahogany.    It features the trademark Hallberg-Rassy fixed windshield.  Boats built up to 1972 were Rassys and were constructed in Kungsviken, Sweden.  Boats built after 1972 were Hallberg-Rassys.

According to Tomas Rassy, "Rasmus is a German god of wind. As you might know, my father comes from southern Germany.   That's how the name "Rasmus" came up.  Simple as that!"

The Nab 35 is a Rasmus outfitted in England.  John and Maren Caldwell have sent in a copy of a Nab 35 brochure for us.

I've found that HR owners are very pleased with their boats.  If you are considering purchasing a Rasmus and came to this site to gather information, contact any of the owners below.  More information and specifications about the Rasmus 35 can be found at Hallberg-Rassy's site at www.hallberg-rassy.se/rasmus/rasmus.html.

We also have copies of a Rasmus brochure, sent in by Bill Nygaard-Ostby.  Click on the thumbnail image below for a full view.

  • Vessel name:  BEAUT

  • Previous known vessel names and owners:  Minka, unknown German ownerRandango, unknown German ownerViator, Mr. van Wondegem ( previous dutch owner)
  • Other comments, plans, special notes:  Since a few month's I am the proud owner of a wooden Hallberg Rassy 35 Rasmus. As you probably know, only two of them are build in wood (mahogany) and this is one of them. The family Priess in Denmark claims to have the number 1. So mine must be number 2. (I do not know where I can find the hull number).  On the Hallberg Rassy site you can find a picture of the stern of the "Randango" (Gallery Previous models.)

Now, I'm certainly no expert, but I understand that a fiberglass boat model is first built in wood, from which molds are made to manufacture hulls and decks of GRP.  Could this boat be one of those? -- Dave Gibson

  • Year: 1967
  • Rig, (sloop, ketch, etc.) : Sloop
  • Hull number:  1 or 2
  • Vessel name:  Rigel
  • Home Port:  Lyttelton, New Zealand
  • Owner:   Mike Holibar
  • Email address:   mandjholibar " @ " clear.net.nz
  • Previous known vessel names and owners:
  • Other comments, plans, special notes:  Rigel is one of the Mahogany boats. She is suffering from a bit of rot here and ther. As I am repairing the cabin top I would like to build a wheelhouse shelter as per Nab 35. To my eye this would make Rigel handsome indeed. If anyone could provide any drawings or pictures that would help me get the proportions right, I would be most grateful.

  • Home Port:  Hamble, UK
  • Owner:   Paul & Jenny Goodhand

  • Previous known vessel names and owners:  RJ Chandler.
  • Other comments, plans, special notes:  We have just bought Gralyn, in fact she will become ours on 2 October 2002.  At present she is lying in a Marina in the north of England, about 300 miles from our home! The hull needs treating for osmosis, and the rudder, mast and rigging needs some work before we can sail. Hope to get it sorted out before next sailing season!  Then, the year after, all plans being good, early retirment will give us the time to cruise.

As new owners, we will welcome advice from any other Nab/Rasmus owners out there. Does anyone know where I can find the hull number?

Since regerstering our 1970 Nab 35 "Gralyn" on the Classic HR site late in 2002, things have moved on. She is nearing the end of a major refit, which has taken about a year longer than predicted, as I had unexpected major surgery last summer, which put me out of action for a few months. Anyway, I am fit enough now to carry on, and Gralyn is due to be trucked from Lancashire to our home port of Hamble (Southampton), UK, on 15 April, a distance of about 300 miles. By co-incidence, I obtained a quote for lifting off the truck, and launching, from Lauren Marine, who operate a small yard on the River Itchen, Southampton. On visiting the yard, I found out it is right alongside the old Whites Shipyard sheds, where Reg Freeman fitted out the Nabs in the early 1970's (after buying in the hulls from Sweden), so, in more ways that one, Gralyn will be coming home.  We can't wait to have her here, near to home, get the new mast stepped, and get sailing!

  • Previous known vessel names and owners:  Nabucco is the original name in the British Registry of Ships.Original owner": John J. Mitchell, and from 1973/94 Family Cottam. I have owned the vessel since 30.6.94
  • Other comments, plans, special notes:   The British Registry of Ships states that she was built in Kungviken, Rassys Bat and Southampton by Reg Freeman (Yachts) Ltd. She was the subject of an article in Yachts & Yachting in October 1972 and can be plainly recognised from the photograph used in this article. She is fitted with sliding doors and not removeable wash-boards. There are 5 aluminium framed windows down each side with three sliding open if required. The whole dog-house is manufactured in glass fibre and can be removed in one peice if required. The engine is the original Volve MD21A 76hp unit and has been rebuilt in the last 3 years. The vessel is in first class condition and does not show her age. My wife and I have been living aboard since our retirement in June 2000, we are currently in Holland.  We have todate not found another Nab/Rasmus 35 that is the same as "Nabucco" and she had a 28ft.11inch water line and a weight of 9.27 imperial tonnes.

  • Previous known vessel names and owners:  We are owner number 4. ( Sorry we have not got the other owners names for the moment )
  • Other comments, plans, special notes:  We are at this very moment planning for our "trip around the world " that will commence the 6 of June 1999 at 18.00 local time from Wasahamnen in Stockholm.   Our first stop will be just around the corner were we will drink a lot of champagne just to celebrate this day that we have planned for over 6 years.   Our second stop ???   No idea, from this day we just want to live and enjoy life and most important, spend it together.   Our Tuff is a hardtop and we have renovated the whole vessel including the engine, all electrics, adjusted the toilet so it now has a shower with hot water etc... ( list can be long ).   Tuff is equiped with windpilot, new sails, el. generators, wind power generator, gps, navtex, etc..
  • Personal update 12/18/98:  As you probably have noticed we don´t have our computer on every day, but we really want to keep contact with you and the rest of the Rasmus " gang".   By the way, we just bought ourselves a dog to have onboard Tuff. It is a Portugeese waterdog. His name is Lurvas, ( means Cool in Swedish ).  We will keep you updated in our progress with both Tuff and Lurvas.
  • Update 12/8/01- Lotta, Roffe, and Lurvas are in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

Update 1/23/99:  Note from Dave - I noticed the bowsprit on Tuff when I added their photo to our web page.  I emailed Lotta and Roffe, asking if the bowsprit was on the boat when they bought it.  Lotta's reply follows:   Hi Dave,
It took a while to understand bow sprit, we call it peke in swedish.  No, this was not on when we bought Tuff.  Roffe made it himself. We bought parts from a junk dealer, and we took the oak from our farm and after a lot of messauring and thinking, well now it is there and it works very well. We have put our genua a little bit forward now so it is on the Profurl ( new as well ) on our bow sprit. This makes Tuff more balanced and "he" doesn´t want to "luff" so much now.   We also have our Bruce anchor on the bow sprit and even here Roffe has constructed a "keeper" for the anchor so it will stick in place when we are sailing and don´t jump to one side to the other which is common with the ones you buy.  I am very happy to have this handy husband !

  • Other comments, plans, special notes I just became the proud owner of an old but still sound Rasmus.  At this moment I am installing a new Yanmar 4HE diesel.  On short term I want to increase the sail area by installing a longer mast (Selden with in mast furling) and boom; and by adding a small bowsprite. Is there any info available on the sailplan, a detailed rigplan and/or the info needed to develop a new sailplan, such as heeling stability of the hull at 30 degrees heeling and the hull/ sail area balance?

  • Other comments, plans, special notes:  I never met him but bought the boat from his son who is not into sailing (he climbs mountains instead)but keen to see his dad's boat go to a good home.

George was a keen sailor and also had a boat in the US. Sadly cancer got him. I bought the boat at the end of last year and have yet to put her in the water.

She was green from sitting for sale for a year. She had a good survey and having cleaned her down a bit, she is very original and appears in good condition apart from needing varnish work.

She was being prepared for a trip to Norway so has had her standing rigging replaced, new sails, a radar and other necessary basics for offshore cruising done. Otherwise, she has no fridge, heater, hot water or a shower and you have to handpump the water. George was a purist.

It still has its original MD21A motor that has now done circa 3000 hours. The guy in the boatyard told me it ran ok when he brought it ashore but I guess I am looking at an overhaul sooner rather than later. As an engineer (and a Scotsman) I'm inclined to replace it with an overhauled Peugeot Engine and will be looking for a suitable donor car soon.

I look forward to bringing the boat back up to scratch and to discussing all my problems with you all in the forum!

Will email a photo separately when I take one!

We have two young girls ages 6 and 3 and will probably be in the younger range of Rasmus owners. It is our first yacht having raced and sailed dinghys and other peoples boats for years.

It seemed like a nice way to go cruising the west coast so we will begin in May. Happy cruising to you all

Euan and Susan McKenzie

I am the 4th owner the NABULUS having sailed the North Seas, then the Med and 3rd owner brought her across the ocean to the Caribbean.  She has a hard dodger, 75 hp Volvo Penta, in very fine shape.  Sloop rigged.  Her home port is Essex, Ct where I winter in the water and have my own mooring for summer.  I am looking forward to talking with others with boat of same vintage. By the way, although short masted for heavy North Sea sailing, we did over 9 knots in a good 25 kn.  breeze this summer outdistancing other boats who had to reef.

Generally she is in very good condition but there are some improvements we have in mind (especially in the galley and the electrics). We have already fitted a new stem head fitting with mooring roller and self recovering anchor roller.

  • Previous known vessel names and owners: Dr.Tom Stratton - owner from 1973 to Dec 2001
  • Other comments, plans, special notes:  Tom Stratton bought a part built hull from HR through Reg.Freeman(Yachts)Ltd who occupied Whites Shipyard at Woolston, Southampton, UK.  He didn't like the layout of the main cabin and asked Reg Freeman (designer of the Seadog - a 30 ft ketch having great similarities to the Rasmus) to redesign the cabin. He also asked him to design a ketch rig.  I believe Styria was the first 35 to have this rig. The main cabin has a central table, bunks either side, galley at port rear and chart table starboard rear. The rest of the layout is the same as other 35s.  He engaged a boat builder - Frank Clarke of Broadstone in Dorset to finish Styria. He did an excellent job and Tom told me the agreed price was £1-50p per hour plus materials. Tom said it cost him about the same price as an off the shelf model but for that he got the boat he wanted plus a lot of extras.

About 6 Years ago Tom decided Styria was getting a bit of a handful(he was 77) so as he didn't want a motor boat he decided to re-engine. He got rid of the faithful 4.108 and installed another engine built by Perkins for Volvo and that was the MD23L. He repropped Styria and with a total of 56 HP under the bonnet she'll do 9 kts flat out.

We bought Styria last Christmas - we'd had a Seadog for 11 years and thought she was super but wanted a bit more room. When we first went aboard Styria we thought we'd just stepped onto a big Seadog - we were sold.  It proved to be a wise choice as I am continually suprised at how well she sails, how comfortable she is and how safe she feels and is. I only had a short season this year as I had to bring my old boat down from Scotland to her new home on the Thames so didn't get away until the begining of August. We had a West Country cruise to the Isles of Scilly visiting the Channel Islands on the way. Styria went like a dream taking it all in her stride.  Next year we'll be going further afield.

  • Other comments, plans, special notes:     the hull is in good condition with some gel coat crazing on the stem and at the stern. the deck has very little crazing ,and one gel coat bubble about 3in diameter, repaired.
the engine/transmission was replaced with an identical volvo md 21 and reduction-reverse gear type rb transmission. if any one needs info on the refit and price email me. also, i read in one of the hr literature that the md 21 is the same basic engine as used in the peugot 404,504(?) older cars. for rebuilders look into this. i hear parts may be available from peugot.
let me know if any one knows more.
the sails are old ,but in good shape. main,180 ,150 genoa jib and spinnaker.
the interor was in good shape. except for the folding table. i rebuilt it and is now in good shape. the propane tank and regulator was missing. i have temporarily used 1 lb cylinders.and bought new fittings, pressure gauge and on/off valve. i got these from an rv supplier ,the are exactly the same as can be bought from a boat supply store but at half the price. now the original stove works. the water and pressure water worked. the hot water tank was missing, i haven't replaced it yet. the depth sounder works but not very well, lacks senstivity.does any one have a repair manual for the seafarer type 3 i would like to obtain a copy.the knot meter works but the impeller was fouled with bottom paint. i cleaned it and it works better, however i think it does not protrude far enough into the water stream . i think the thru hull fittng it too long for the impeller assembly to extend far enough into the water stream. any thoughts?
the steering is by vetus hydrallics , original, it works ,but i think it needs bleeding. too much slop when wheel reversed.
when i go in reverse and go hard over to starboard the prop hits the rudder if i back to hard . i need to put some rudder stops on the steering.
the head liner in the main cabin was drooping just below the map deck in the cockpit the vinyl head liner had shrunk , it looked like it had been stretched to tight when the boat was built. it was two inches short. i cut the liner and glued the short part to the edge of the roof and that left a two inch wide area uncovered which i covered with a two and one half inch wide batten with the same thickness as the other battens. it looks really good.
the running gear was not used much. i found all the gear stored away in lockers and cleaned and repaired them. now i'm using the double boom vang and the cunningham.
the roller reefing worked somewhat. i had to clean and repair the roller reefing gear on the goose neck and it works very good now. i also had to put a lacing line on the bottom sail slides so that i could release them from the sail when i roller reefed. they fouled the luff when i reefed.the reefed sail does not have a luff or leech grommet to tie them off to the boom and therefore give a good sail shape when reefed. however the sail as now used doesn't look too bad.
the boat did not sail well, and it looked like the rig was loose when i used a tension guage to chech the rigging i found the head stay tension less than 300 lbs . for 1/4 in wire it should be about 1300 lbs. when i retensioned the head stay and the upper and lower shrouds and back stay she sailed much better. now i have to get used to how she sails before i do a fine tune. i believe she will sail well. even though she has much windage and a short rig.
i'm trying to get her back to where she was originally so then i can decide what to do to her to make her better.
this is definitely a good boat to spend time and money on.
the cockpit teak was a mess . the solid teak starboard hatch cover was broken. the edge boards were broken and missing leaving the grain of the board unprotected from breaking. the starboard engine hatch was the same for the same reason. i took them off cleaned and glued them and then had a carpenter make new sidepieces and glued them on. they are working well now. however. i screwed the engine hatch teak cover to the fiber glass engine it sits on. now there is no place to cause the cover to move and crack as it did. the star board hatch cover needs a plywood backing to give it the same kind of support. i took off all of the finish and am cleaning and brightning all the cockpit and deck teak. i will leave it bare until i decide how to finish it. and i will keep on cleaning it.
i have much more to do to make her the way i want her. i would like to keep her original as possible. she doesn't have the original windscreen and i may not try to replace or duplicate it. does any one know of any used ones or a replacement?

  • Other comments, plans, special notes:  It´s a hardtop version.  The accomodation is not made by Hallberg Rassy Varv but by Mr. Ovesen himself in an excellent workmanship! It´s made just like the ones made by the Hallberg Rassy Varv except the navigators table at starboard in the main cabin, here has Mr. Ovesen fortunately made a good sized hanging locker instead. We have provided her with davits and a windmill.  Mr. & Mrs. Ovesen have been sailing her in the Scandinavia, in the Baltic, a trip to the Mediterranean and a trip to Paris.  In our first 4 seasons we have been sailing her in the Baltic, to Germany, Poland and the archipelago at the Swedish east coast.  You are welcome to email us.
